And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Eli had messed up with his children, and the consequences were already determined. Neither he nor his sons would continue in the ministry. Yet the grace of God is always at work, and His mercies are new every morning. God amazingly and graciously allowed Eli to have some influence on the one whom He had chosen for the next stage in Israel’s spiritual journey.
Eli may picture all of us more than we would like. Few of us are as successful in the Christian life as we sometimes think we are. Not many of us raise our children to be exactly what we hoped they would become. We survive on the mercies of God, and if we thrive, it is entirely by His grace.
And once in a while, God graciously allows us to have some small connection with spiritual greatness. Like Kimball—whose name would be lost to history except that God used him to win just one man, D. L. Moody, to Christ—God occasionally allows those of us whose contribution may seem limited or small to touch something that is significant, substantial, perhaps even great.
I wish Eli’s sons had been more godly. I grieve the loss of a family to the things of God. But I am thankful, hopeful, and encouraged that God’s grace gave Eli this one final opportunity—to perceive that the LORD had called the child.

Grace After Consequences: The Story of Eli and Samuel
God still speaks—and His Word still answers life’s hardest questions. 📖✨
If you’ve ever wondered how God can use imperfect people, why failure doesn’t end your usefulness, or how to recognize God’s call, the Bible speaks clearly and graciously.
Even after consequences, God’s mercy is at work. Even when we fall short, His purposes continue. That truth brings hope to parents, leaders, and believers who know their own weaknesses.
