And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
I had an experience just this week that speaks to this passage and makes it very personal. I won’t go into details—the Lord knows them—but this week I did something blatantly, even I would say premeditatedly, wrong. I think most people would consider it a small thing, but once the Lord convicted me of it, it became huge in my soul—painful, even paralyzing for a little while.
Once I realized what I had done, and the extent to which I went to do it, the grief I experienced was overwhelming. It was as if God pointed His finger into my heart and said, “Thou art the man.”
There is no doubt that David knew what he had done was wrong.
- He knew taking Bathsheba was wrong.
- He knew taking the life of Uriah was wrong.
- He knew all the manipulation he used to cover his sin was wrong.
And yet, when Nathan approached him with the story of the man and his lamb, David was blinded—perhaps numb—to his guilt. Until the man of God, the Word of God, made it plain: “Thou art the man.”
What was true of David, and what is true of me, is true of us all:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
“There is none righteous, no, not one.”
I’m not trying to diminish my own sin, but to present a very present truth. Thou art the man—whoever it is reading this just now—you are the man.
- Are you female? Thou art the man.
- Are you a child? Thou art the man.
- Are you a preacher? Thou art the man.
- Have you been a faithful Christian for many years? Thou art the man.
God used Nathan to bring David to his senses in this matter, and Psalm 51 records for us the result.
Psalm 51:1–19 (KJV)
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
- Don’t hide.
- Don’t ignore.
And don’t live in guilt.
- Confront the sin.
- Confess the sin.
And trust God to cleanse you from the unrighteousness of the sin.
