Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
There are some strong insights to be gained from this passage concerning the believer and sin.
First, sin and lust are connected.
Lust is the desire—the drive of the flesh toward something unwarranted, something that does not belong to it. Lust, when it is finished, leads to sin; and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.
Second, lust demands obedience.
It’s a bully. It’s not in charge—at least not in the life of the child of God—but you would think it is. It’s big, loud, and threatening. It’s used to being in control and would make you think it still is. Lust has followers—those who join with it for the power it seems to have over others.
Salvation does not displace lust.
Lust still lives in the bodies of those who are saved. God does not become the bully, driving out the bully called lust.
But lust can be denied its power.
We do not have to obey it. We have, if you will, a stronger Big Brother. Christ in us gives us the power to deny the demands of lust and reject the reign of sin.
