For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Our text sits within the broader context of Romans 5:12–21. Paul concludes that section with these words:
Romans 5:21 (KJV)
That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
There is also a clear connection to:
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown writes of this righteousness, “The proper idea of it therefore is, ‘right to live.’” Think of it! The gift of God is the right to live—or, as Romans 6:23 says, eternal life.
No wonder, then, that we cannot boast. And no wonder those who do not know Christ are so critical. The unbelieving world thinks of righteousness as an earned quality. They see it as always doing the right thing, or as the reputation of never doing the wrong thing—in other words, living rightly.
Now, the Christian certainly desires to live rightly. We have every reason to long for that, and we have tools in the Word of God to help us do so. But righteousness—the right to live eternally—is a gift. It is not earned.
The reputation of being right, in the Christian’s understanding, is not before men but before God. GOD sees us as justified, possessing the very righteousness of Christ. And that righteousness is not of our own doing—it is a gift purchased by Jesus through His death, burial, and resurrection.
Boasting? Oh no—not among those who possess this “right to live.” Far from it. It is humbling—yes, even humiliating. We, the most unworthy of sinners, have the right to live because the One who has lived “from old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2) died in our place.
