1 Chronicles 16:15 (KJV)

Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;

I’m going to take the phrase “a thousand generations” as a metaphor meaning throughout all of history—from Abraham until the end of time as we know it.

We find this phrase elsewhere in the Word of God at least twice:

Deuteronomy 7:9 (KJV)
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Psalms 105:8 (KJV)
He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.

Notice that in the passage in Psalms there is an equation between “for ever” and “a thousand generations.”

It is not possible to tie this usage of a generation to any of the common views of how long a generation is (typically anywhere from 20 to 80 years). I could attempt to connect it to a less common, more recent idea—given the rapid pace of society—of 7–8 years, which would total 7,000–8,000 years. That would roughly align with what I believe to be the age of the earth, including the millennial kingdom. But that is a stretch.

Here’s what I can say:

• This covenant crosses every dispensation known to man.
• Times change. Cultures change. History changes the face of men and how we view our world. 
• But God has not changed.
• His promises are sure.

And whatever else we see—however long man remains on this present earth—nothing will change the outcome God planned before the foundation of the world.
