2 Peter 1:4 (KJV)
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
As if having all things that pertain unto life and godliness is not enough, God also gives us “exceeding great and precious promises.”
It is of note that these promises are not listed. They are not the same as the “all things,” nor are they the qualities following that we ought to add to our faith. These promises, in my understanding, are not listed because they are not only great in quality, but also great in number—so great that it would be challenging, if not impossible, to list them all in one place. Further, to list them would almost imply that one could fully quantify their greatness.
How can one describe the infinite? How would we ever take a photograph of that which cannot be contained? Even so, these promises exceed the natural ability to place them fully into pen and paper. One is then resigned to depend upon the infallible, inerrant, inspired Word of God as the source of these promises. We are then, as individuals of faith, asked to search them out for ourselves, being assured they are there to be discovered.
Be assured—they are precious promises, of such value that men and women throughout the ages have laid down their lives rather than deny them.
They are given unto us. We do not work for them. We cannot earn them. But, as with any gift, we will not enjoy them until we receive them. We receive them by faith, we receive them through discovering them, and we receive them by accepting and embracing that they are ours.
