But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
It is my understanding that the expression here used — “that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” — is common in Rabbinical writings. It therefore appears to be more allegorical in expression than doctrinal. Those who use this passage to support a theistic evolution argument — that one day to God might mean a thousand years, or even millions of years — are stretching the authority of the text too far for it to serve as a substantive argument.
A day, as described in the Genesis creation account, is “the evening and the morning,” a literal twenty-four-hour period of time. I view the doctrine of the text as declaring the timelessness of God. One thousand years or one day are equal to God because He exists outside of time.
On the other hand, given that the final biblical dispensation for this earth is the Millennial Kingdom, or one-thousand-year, reign of Christ, it seems to me that there may still be significance in the comparison.
Take into consideration that the biblical record appears to indicate the earth is about 6,000 years old, give or take. I am not saying we possess an exact timeline, but rather an approximate one. It is therefore not difficult for me to envision the sixth millennium of “the heavens and the earth, which are now” (2 Peter 3:7) ending with the Tribulation Period, followed by Jesus Christ returning at the end of those seven years to establish His Millennial Kingdom — the seventh “day of rest” — and then the eighth (being typical of a new beginning) leading into a new heaven, a new earth, and timeless eternity.

What do you believe 2 Peter 3:8 is really teaching? Does it speak primarily of God’s timelessness, prophecy, or both? Share your thoughts in the comments — I’d enjoy hearing your perspective and discussing the Scriptures together.
