1 Samuel 12:7 (KJV) Reasoning Skills

1 Samuel 12:7 (KJV)
Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.
This chapter gives great insight in reasoning through disagreements.
Samuel won the right to reason
He began by informing the people he had honored their request. Though he did not agree with it he did understand (through the revelation of God) that this was their right.
Samuel had an honest testimony
He had never mistreated them or taken from them.
Samuel sought their acknowledgment of this
And they agreed. He had been a just leader.
Samuel requested they be still and allow him the full line of reason
To listen to an argument one must be still. He cannot be chomping for his turn to speak. He cannot interrupt mid-sentence.
When the people acknowledged their sin in asking for a king Samuel encouraged them. He did not browbeat them. His only request was that they would obey the Lord from here on. None of us do right all the time. Like Israel, I suspect we add one sin on another. The thing to do is to press on, confess our sin and pick ourselves up to follow the Lord.
