1 Chronicles 10:14 (KJV) Religious But Lost

1 Chronicles 10:14 (KJV)

And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

God’s Word lists a series of offenses which led to the death of King Saul. The final one was that he “enquired not of the Lord.” There is some difficulty here because the Bible says in 1 Samuel 28:6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. There Saul did enquire but God did not answer.

Students of the Bible have proposed several ways to reconcile this:

  • He did not enquire in the right manner
  • He did not enquire at the proper time
  • He did not enquire in this instance

The Hebrew word translated enquire means to follow or to seek. I believe his transgression was not that he never looked to God but that he did not live as a follower of God.

That King Saul was religious, there can be no doubt. He was a Jew. He believed the Jewish traditions. He embraced the concept of the one God of the Hebrews. There were moments in his life when his religious nature manifested itself brightly:

  • In his honest and humble character when we are first introduced to him
  • In his prophesying with the prophets just after his anointing

He had a close, though not submissive relationship with Samuel. He was interested in the blessing of God, and he wanted to do those things that would gain his blessing.

But Saul was not a follower of God. He was, to use our terms, religious but lost.

There’s the warning and lesson for us. Seeking God’s favor and even seeking God’s direction in life is not the same as seeking and following after God. God is not a genie promising to give us our wishes so long as we rub the lamp aright. He is the Almighty. It is our place to surrender to Him and obey His voice.

This Saul would not do.

Be careful to avoid his transgression.
