John 3:19 (KJV)

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Nobody likes the sense of condemnation.

It sounds so harsh, so final. The condemned man holds no hope. It is as if he were living dead. All he sees in his future is the day of his sentence.

And so, Jesus comes with a dreadful message. The gospel has good news, but its brightness is only witnessed in the backdrop of this dark judgment.

There is no turning away. There is no recourse, and there is no one who escapes it. We are born condemned.

What did we do, you ask? “Men loved darkness rather than light.”

That light that was come into the world is Jesus. The darkness of this world, the evidence of its condemnation, is obvious. Men love the evil of this world and not the righteousness of Jesus. As time passes, it becomes apparent that there is a growing hatred for Jesus.

• Hatred because His Word exposes their deeds
• Hatred because He is unbending against their evil
• Hatred because they know they are judged and condemned
• Hatred because they sense the soon execution of their sentence

Have you ever read of the last-minute commuting of a death sentence?

That’s why Jesus came.

Jesus bore our condemnation on the cross. His resurrection is testimony of God’s satisfaction. The promise in His Word is, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Don’t hate Jesus; hate the darkness. Turn from it to the light of life that is Christ. Call upon Him. Trust Him alone.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
