Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
Communication happens within the senses. The best communication engages multiple senses at once.
As Jesus began His Kingdom of Heaven parables, He engaged two of His audience’s senses:
Hearken – Listen up. Pay attention.
It’s almost like a call to order. The crowd has gathered, but when people first assemble, they are often still caught up in their own thoughts—the journey there, acknowledging others, greetings and introductions, small talk and distractions. If the purpose of the gathering is to be attained, the various interests of the assembly must be subordinated to the message at hand. Many distractions must be set aside, and the group must become of one mind.
Hearken.
Quiet your thoughts.
Behold – Look here. Focus.
Once distractions are set aside—temporarily or permanently—people may be brought to see what they might never have noticed otherwise.
A quiet crowd is essential for communication, but communication requires much more. True communication happens when the audience sees what the speaker presents. It’s not merely that we stop talking while another speaks; it’s that we grasp what they see.
• We may accept or reject what is presented.
• We may agree or disagree.
This is our right.
But we have not truly communicated if we did not hearken and behold.
