But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
This chapter begins with the concept of hearing His voice:
John 10:3 (KJV)
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
Now we come to the questions of the Jews:
John 10:24-25 (KJV)
Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
Jesus had told them plainly. But they just didn’t hear.
I want to suggest that the spiritual issue that ought to concern us most is whether we hear the voice of Christ.
• It’s not enough to learn a catechism or a set of doctrines.
• It’s not enough to grow comfortable with a church culture and lifestyle.
• It’s not enough to master the mechanics of Bible study and lesson (or sermon) preparation and delivery.
• It’s not enough to mimic the lessons we’ve learned in Bible college or seminary.
• It’s not enough to gain the approval of men in our chosen circle.
In the end, it all comes down to this—have we heard the voice of Jesus?
