(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
It is clear that the writer of this Gospel includes this parenthetical statement to clarify which Mary is being referred to. Regarding this passage, John Gill writes:
“Not the woman in Luke 7:37, as some have thought, whose name is not mentioned, and which history is not related by John at all: but Mary in John 12:3, who is both mentioned by name, and along with Lazarus her brother, and with whom all the circumstances of the affair suit; and though the fact was not yet done, yet John writing many years after it was done, and when it was well known, proleptically, and in a parenthesis…”
Many skeptics claim that the Bible is filled with additions to the text, inserted by scribes over the centuries. They argue that in some cases, it is impossible to determine what was in the originals and what was added later—though they have developed their own specialized fields of study to "root out" these so-called parenthetical additions.
Additionally, some claim that the Gospel of John was not only the last Gospel written but possibly not even composed during the lifetime of the Apostle John.
However, J. Warner Wallace refutes this assertion, arguing that there is no substantiated evidence for such claims. He further contends that the Gospel of John, though the last of the Gospels written, was not "late." “John’s Gospel most reasonably appears to have been written after the other Gospels and prior to 70 AD.”[1]
All arguments by higher critics, skeptics, and even some Christians who question the reliability of certain passages—on the basis of supposed human interjections—stem from the same issue: they have forgotten the God of the Bible and His power to preserve His Word.
