John 12:2 (KJV) Supper with Lazarus

John 12:2 (KJV)

There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

Some Bible students believe this event took place about two months after Lazarus' resurrection and that it occurred in the house of Simon the leper, as recorded in Matthew 26:6 and Mark 14:3. What we know for certain is that it was in Bethany, a group had gathered, and Martha was serving.

As I read this passage, a thought struck me:

Imagine sitting at supper with a man who had been dead for four days—now alive again!

If it had been two months since his resurrection, I can only imagine the conversations Lazarus must have had and the questions he must have been asked. And yet, Scripture tells us nothing else about him. Barnes notes, "How long he lived is unknown, nor is it recorded that he made any communication about the world of spirits. It is remarkable that none who have been restored to life from the dead have made any communications respecting that world."

Apparently, God’s greatest concern is not that we have more information about the next life, but that we prepare for it.

Then another thought struck me:

Rather than focusing on Lazarus, imagine sitting at supper with the One who had called him from the grave!

Isn’t it true that we so often focus on the things surrounding Jesus instead of Jesus Himself?

       Peter walking on the water

       The storm that was calmed

       The blind who could see

       The crippled now walking

We long for these same miracles for ourselves and our loved ones.

·       We want them to rise above trouble.

·       We want suffering to end.

·       We want healing, health, prosperity, and happiness.

We want Jesus to give us all these things.

But I wonder—do we truly want Jesus?

O Lord, give us Jesus.
