And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
I just returned from an overnight trip to visit my mother. Mom is 87 years old and has COPD. Dad passed away a year and a half ago, and Mom knows her time is not too far off. She developed pneumonia over the New Year when I last visited her. My wife and I cut that trip short because we could see she needed rest, but she wasn’t going to relax if we were there.
When we arrived this time, she admitted she didn’t feel well, but she forced herself to stay up from 2 in the afternoon until 9 in the evening. She woke up very early this morning, and we enjoyed a good visit, but by 9, we could see she was worn out. At 10, she said she had to lie down for a while. Since we had planned to leave between 11 and 12, we decided to go ahead and pack up so she could get the rest she needed.
I prayed with Mom, and we spoke for a few minutes about what we both know will happen much sooner than either of us would like. But Mom is saved, and I know that she and I will spend all eternity together, never to be parted again.
As I drove the five hours home today, I meditated on this passage. Jesus said, “I will… receive you unto myself.” The tenderness in His words stood out to me. That reminded me of Luke 16:22 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom…
Carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom.
It’s not like a business transaction.
It’s not just a matter of fact—here, then there.
It’s tender, loving, kind, and compassionate.
It’s precious, sentimental, soft, and endearing.
From this side of eternity, death can seem cold and brutal. But that’s not what it feels like on the other side.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
