I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
I’m particularly interested in the phrase, “they have kept thy word.”
It appears to me that Jesus was referring to the twelve here. There were others who had followed Him, still others who would be added at Pentecost, and many more who continue to be added today. Jesus said He prayed for the first, and He prayed for those who would come after them.
“They have kept thy word.”
- This was before His capture, trial, and crucifixion.
- This was before Judas’ betrayal had been finalized.
- This was before the three fell asleep in the garden.
- This was before Peter’s denial.
- This was before they returned to fishing.
- This was before Thomas doubted.
At this point in their lives and ministry, it could have been anyone’s guess what they would do in the future.
But this wasn’t anyone’s guess. This was the word of the only begotten Son of God.
- He knew there was a devil among them.
- He knew they were weak in the flesh.
- He knew they would have doubts and apprehensions.
But He also knew that, to a man, they would give their lives to preach the Gospel and that not one of them would deny His resurrection.
Jesus also knows you and me.
I am thankful He has confidence in His redeemed.
