John 18:18 (KJV) Where You Stand Matters

John 18:18 (KJV)

And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

I had just read, John 18:5 (KJV)

They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

Then I read John 18:18 (KJV):
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

Where and with whom a man stands can say a lot about him.

So when I read where Peter stood, I thought, “This won’t end well.”

Judas stood where he did by conscious choice. He had betrayed Jesus. He had aligned himself with those who would condemn the Lord. Though he later regretted what he had done, it was too late. How he handled the conviction he was under demonstrated his sense of lostness, hopelessness, and blindness to the grace of God.

Peter stood where he did for convenience. Though he was near Jesus, he chose a place that put him in the mix—maybe where he wouldn’t be spotted as a disciple, and where the fire was, comforting to the flesh. His position placed him in compromise and temptation, and he bowed under it.

But Peter’s end was much different. Under conviction, he repented. Though things were shaky for a few days, he was there to witness the resurrection of Christ and to rest in His grace. Peter was no more a perfect man after the resurrection than he was before, but he was a changed man.

For the rest of his life, he stood with Jesus—never to deny Him again.
