And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
There are some subtleties in the text that we might miss—subtleties Pilate may have overlooked, but the Jews almost certainly did not.
The issue was whether Jesus was the King of the Jews. By this time, there was no Jewish king. Herod’s reign—a sham kingdom, appointed by Rome—had dissolved into tetrarchies. Pilate may have been aware that the Jewish teachers foretold of a coming King, but he surely wouldn’t have considered that this King would also be the Messiah, the Savior, God come in the flesh.
The Jews, however, would have known.
Imagine the moment as Pilate presented Jesus before them—bloodied, beaten, and humiliated—declaring, “Behold your King!”
- This is the One promised for thousands of years.
- This is the One who would take away the sin of the world.
- This is the One who would fulfill all of God’s promises to Israel.
John 19:15 KJV
But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
At that moment, Israel turned its back on God. It is obvious that their back remains turned even today.
But God has not turned His back on them.
The crucifixion of Jesus was a necessary part of the redemption of man. It was followed by God’s current work in this Church Age. But the promises God made to Abraham, to David, and to Daniel still hold true.
Jesus is their King.
