Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
So far as I can tell, there is nothing in this text to indicate that going fishing was an act of backsliding, disobedience, or lack of faith. In fact, it could be seen as just the opposite. They knew that Jesus had risen from the grave. They knew He had said He would meet them in Galilee.
Being fishermen by trade, it was natural and proper that, as they waited, they employed their time productively. There is nothing in the Bible to suggest that waiting on the Lord is synonymous with idleness. Rather, the Bible teaches us to be industrious, hardworking, and willing to get our hands dirty. It instructs us to work so that we may give to those in need, provide for our families, and care for widows.
It is entirely possible to wait on God while working. Notably, Jesus appeared to them while they were working—not in a time of idleness. Instead of rebuking their labor, He blessed it with a full catch.
Remember when the people wanted to force Jesus to be king? He said it wasn’t because they believed, but because He had given them bread and fish.
Certainly, some use work as an excuse to neglect the things of God. But it is equally possible to use a false display of faith as an excuse to shirk the duty of work.
Wait on the Lord. Trust Him. Obey Him. Worship Him. Follow Him.
And while you wait—work.
