Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Not many days ago, a man wrote to me and said, “John 6:53-57 settles all doubt about the Holy Eucharist. You just can’t explain it away.” I replied, “No explanation is necessary, only a correct interpretation and a grip on reality. That is not Christ’s body and blood in the Eucharist.”
The Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation clearly demonstrates how easily people can be deceived. No thinking person receives Catholic communion and sincerely believes what they taste in the elements is flesh and blood. Furthermore, their version of the Eucharist illustrates how a preconceived notion—an idea planted in the mind, often before we even realize it’s happened—can sway our understanding of the Bible. Our world has been so influenced by Catholic doctrine that even most born-again Christians believe it over the Bible.
Martin Luther, trained as a Catholic priest, was excommunicated because he challenged the pope’s teachings. Once out, he realized the Catholic Church could not hold the keys to heaven and hell. With his eyes opened to that much truth, he expressed what everyone already knew—the Eucharist is a lie. But he was so ingrained in the doctrine that, rather than reading John 6 with a fresh perspective, he simply altered the deception and developed the doctrine of consubstantiation—the belief that the body and blood of Christ are with the elements. While it attempts to reason away the obvious, it still falls short of Scripture.
The elements of the Lord’s Supper are a memorial of His body and blood—nothing more. In fact, I don’t even believe John 6 refers to the Lord’s Supper. Rather, it uses the type of Christ as the Bread of Life to teach us to meet with Him, walk with Him, and be transformed daily into His image.
Anyone with an observant eye can see that Catholics are not changed in the least by receiving the Eucharist.
