John 9:16 (KJV)
Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
Notice that this division was among the Pharisees. Even within this tightly knit religious group, they were divided about Jesus.
I’m reminded of Matthew 10:34 (KJV)
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Men place a high premium on peace and unity. Today’s soft, sentiment-filled society seems willing to sacrifice “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” just to get along. But when we look at the history of mankind, we see that worldwide peace has never existed.
Division is one of the few constants.
Some in the Christian world have mistaken the purpose of our faith—or have deliberately misrepresented it—as a tool for peace. But the truth is, Jesus’ ultimate purpose is not unity, but truth.
Truth leads to salvation.
The saved will, in time, experience peace.
But until God's plan is fulfilled and Satan is finally bound, there will be division. Even among those who claim to be the people of God, there will be division over Jesus.
