For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
Tertullus, in the previous verse, implies that he has many accusations he could bring against Paul—but to spare the governor, he only lists what he considers the worst offenses:
- He was a pestilent fellow.
- He was a mover of sedition among the Jews around the world.
- He was a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
He was pestilent
In other words, they just didn’t like him. He was a troublemaker. He made them uncomfortable in their culture.
He was a mover of sedition
Meaning he led Jews to leave their synagogues and unite with another group.
He was a leader among the sect of the Nazarenes
Meaning he was a preacher of Christ. A Christian. An apostle. A soul-winner.
No wonder Felix chose to wait for the chief captain. Their charges were trivial on every front—except religious.
No one should be executed simply for believing differently than others.
Free, civil, and open proclamation of ideas—that’s what moves people forward.
Suppression and persecution of differing beliefs—that’s what drives us back to the dark ages.

Truth on Trial: Free Speech vs. Religious Rage
They didn’t hate Paul for doing wrong. They hated him for preaching truth. Today, that same bold faith is needed more than ever. What’s one way you’ve faced resistance for standing with Christ? Share in the comments. This week, speak up for Christ. Share the Gospel with one person—at work, in your neighborhood, or online. Be the voice they tried to silence.
