Romans 3:30 (KJV) By Faith and Through Faith

 Romans 3:30 (KJV)

Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

John Gill writes of this:

“…the circumcision of the one does not forward, and the uncircumcision of the other does not hinder, nor neither of them effect the grace of justification: the justifier of them is one and the same, who is God; and the matter of their justification is the same, which is the righteousness of Christ; and the manner of it, or the means of their comfortable apprehension of it…”

The biblical God of the Jews and the Gentiles is the same. He is not one God—or even one type of God—for one, and another God or another type of God for the other. His salvation for the Jew and the Gentile is the same. He has not devised one plan of salvation for the one and a different plan of salvation for the other.

The message of that salvation is the same. He has not written one Word of God for the one and a different word (or words) of God for the other. The outcome of this salvation is the same. He has not devised one form of eternity for one and a different form of eternity for the other.

The Saviour for both is the same. He has not sent one Messiah to the Jews and a different Christ to the Gentiles.

In our text, the word “by” (by faith) carries the connotation of origin. The plan of faith originates with God’s dealings with the Jews. The Word of God came to us by the Jews. The Saviour of the world came to us by the Jews.

The word “through” (through faith) carries the connotation of a channel. What originated with the Jews continues on to the Gentiles. Yet the fundamental element of faith is equal and the same in each—faith in the promised Saviour, Jesus Christ, whose work of salvation is the gospel: His death, burial, and resurrection, as it is delivered to us through His Word, the Bible.
