For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
I note the phrase, “the law of her husband.” Rather than taking the egalitarian vs. complementarian tack, I am going to approach this as an issue of church vs. Israel.
The book of Romans begins by addressing the conflict between Jews and Gentiles, but as the book progresses doctrinally, it seems to me that the Gentile issue becomes more of a church issue. Chapter 12, with its emphasis on the body, is unquestionably local church in nature.
Likely, we ought to study more of this book from that light than we are prone to do. And likely many of the struggles people have with Romans stem from the fact that they are not viewing it through the lens of the local church.
This passage is specific.
Verse 1: “The law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth.”
Verse 2: “The woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth.”
So the subject of the text is the woman (a correlation with the church), and the object of the text is the husband (a correlation with either Israel or Christ).
The point is this: if Israel is dead, we are free—in the local church—to be espoused to another, Jesus Christ.
The entire book of Romans is about the deadness of Israel (as effective to save) and the liveliness of Christ (as able to save).
Read Romans that way, and a great deal of confused doctrine gets straightened out.
