2 Corinthians 1:11 (KJV) Does Prayer Really Help?

2 Corinthians 1:11 (KJV)

Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

A few days ago I reached out to a preacher friend and let him know I was praying for him. Though he and I have only met briefly in person, we have carried on a relationship by message and online for many years.

When my wife found out she had cancer, he was among the first to tell me he was praying. Not long after that, his wife found out she too had cancer. He has been greatly on my heart and soul ever since. Different paths, different outcomes, same promise—and same hope.

His prayers and his care matter to me. He helps me by prayer.

I sent him a quick message to say I was praying for him right then. He replied immediately, “Needing this prayer and encouragement at this second.” I did not know what that meant, but I responded, “Then you have it at this second,” and I began to pray.

Later in the day, he told me that when I sent the message, he and his wife were in her doctor’s office. The doctor was advising them that it was time for his wife to begin hospice care. Neither of them is ready for that, and he needed strength to express that to the doctor.

“It’s not time to give up. We want to fight harder.”

Most people appreciate the sentiment of prayer. Some refuse to speak in such spiritual terms and simply say, “Our thoughts are with you.” But there are some of us who walk with the Lord closely enough to know that the prayers of others are a very real and effective help.
