2 Kings 1:7-8 (KJV) The Man Everyone Recognized

 2 Kings 1:7-8 (KJV)

And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?

And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

Elijah is now preaching under the reign of the second of the kings he would live and serve the Lord under.

Though the kings were men of earthly authority, they were vulnerable to death as well—sometimes more than others. “It is appointed unto man once to die.” To have all the authority in the world means nothing if life is short and eternity is not spent in the presence of God.

Ahaziah attempted to work around this man of God. He certainly knew who Elijah was, as is evident from the text. But he did not want to hear what Elijah had to say. Seeking counsel from those who tell us what we want to hear does not change the truth.

There are multiple sources of advice. The biblical “multitude of counselors” is not a cadre of “yes men.” We do not have to tolerate the negative and the constant naysayers, but we surely should seek those who desire God’s truth—whether it is what we want to hear or not.

Elijah’s power was never his own. All he ever was, was a man of God. Men of God can sit alone on the mountain or preach to kings. It matters not which—so long as it is of the Lord.

If we are to be recognized in this world, let it be for our steadfast faith and nothing else.

The Man Everyone Recognized: Seeking Advice or Seeking Truth?

Truth does not change just because people refuse to hear it. Elijah stood alone before kings because he stood with God.

What do you think?

Do you believe leaders today surround themselves with voices that tell them what they want to hear rather than what is true?
