Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
I’m not given to much hesitation in expressing what I see in the Word of God. Still, this seems to be an area in which it would be wise for me to tread a bit lightly.
What I found curious—and I confess I could find no comments or instruction upon—is that phrase, “the woman.” It’s not “the women,” but “the woman.” God’s Word could have used the plural. Indeed, it did in the verse previous. God chose, instead, to leave this singular, as if personal.
The verses following take us directly to one specific woman—Eve. But this passage is obvious; it speaks of those women in our churches. Indeed, every commentary I use addresses “the women” and not “the woman.”
Here’s my take. This is not to be treated as a general principle that applies to all women across the board. Take this personally. Treat it as God’s message directly to you.
“The woman” who is prone to be less silent, “the woman” who is likely to speak up, “the woman” who perhaps is gifted enough to teach men—that’s “the woman” this text is pointed toward.
It’s personal.
Take it personally.
