And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
There are many biblical terms relating to the church (which is, by the way, always a local congregation).
- Church
- Bride
- Body
- Assembly
Here we find another term—commonly used these days, but often abbreviated and likely misunderstood:
The fellowship of the mystery.
A church is the visible manifestation of the mystery of God’s will—His plan for this age, the biblical definition of election, His predetermined choice for all Christians, whether Jew or Gentile.
That they be united in one new man in Christ Jesus.
The church was the specific message of the Apostle Paul. He loved the Jews and desired their salvation, but he was called to areas that were predominantly Gentile. It fell upon him to make all men see the church as God intends it to be.
This type of church has never been popular. It is the reason Paul was in prison, and it would eventually be the reason he was executed.
From time to time we find churches like this. Perhaps there was a time in the United States when they were more common. But as we see society dividing, we also see a retreat back into “class and kind fellowships.” Churches are now often promoted to fit a particular nationality, preference, or culture.
It fell upon the Apostle Paul to make all men see that this is not the will of God.
- His plan.
- His choice.
- His mystery.
Is that men and women of all races, classes, and cultures come together in Christ, united in local churches for the perfection of the saints, the evangelization of the lost, and the glory of God.
Designer churches, such as we see being developed today, attract people of a specific type. They can sometimes grow quite large. But they do not accomplish the purpose for which God designed churches.

God Designed Churches to Unite People — Not Divide Them
What do you think the “fellowship of the mystery” really means for churches today?
Do you believe churches should bring together believers from every background, or has modern culture pushed churches to divide by preference and personality?
