And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
Everything in the Revelation after chapter three is future. How much future, we have no idea. These things belong to the Father. But what we do know is that they will be done and that they will be done shortly.
That they will be done is a matter of faith.
It seems to me that it is essential that they not be done immediately. How else would the scoffers and mockers be ferreted out? History has been filled with false professors of the Christian faith. All sorts of ideas have been proposed, from the Bible not meaning what it says to the claim that the things of the Bible have already been fulfilled. Of course, there are also those who simply scoff at the whole thing as a myth or fairy tale.
Time is the filter through which faith is tested.
That they must shortly be done is a matter of perspective.
Over the years we've had several examples of this perspective thing. Recently, my grandson, just newly married, went off for ten weeks of police academy training. The school was about seven hours away. He left his wife here at home and drove each Sunday afternoon to the campus where he stayed all week, returning on the weekends.
Ten weeks. The prospect seemed like forever.
It seemed like forever to him in the middle of the thing. As he would climb into his vehicle Sunday afternoon after church, he'd often comment about how long this felt, as if it would never end.
But it did end.
Facing ten weeks away from home seemed like forever. During those ten weeks, being away from home seemed like forever. But it was finished before we all knew it.
Life is like this too. As young people, we wish for the day we get our driver's license. We wish for the day we graduate from high school. We wish for the day we marry. We wish for the day we can retire from work. We wish away our lives, thinking the end is so far away. But I've known people who lived to be nearly 100 years old who have said, "It all happened so fast."
Looking at the eternal future God has prophesied can seem like it will never happen.
Experiencing the events of these 2,000 years since the prophecies were given can seem like they will never end.
But here's the thing. When those things that must be done are done, we will all know, believers and unbelievers alike.
They were done shortly.
