Revelation 19:12 (KJV) Faith’s Hidden Certainty

Revelation 19:12 (KJV)

His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

There are portions of the Word of God so far above us that it is impossible to fully grasp and therefore to adequately teach.

How could anyone honestly claim to know the name that no one but the Lord knows? We make such a mess of things when we refuse to be content to trust God with what He has not revealed.

It is true that God has hidden a wealth of understanding in His world, and it is “the glory of kings to search out the matter.” Yet it is folly to try to declare what God has left to Himself.

Barnes writes, “This cannot here mean that no one could read the name, but the idea is, that no one but himself could fully understand its import. It involved a depth of meaning, and a degree of sacredness, and a relation to the Father, which he alone could apprehend in its true import.”

Gill says, “The incarnate God may be intended, which is a secret and wonderful name, and contains in it, without controversy, a great mystery, which cannot be comprehended by finite minds. And without a divine revelation the name itself could not be known; or it could not be known that God had a Son, and that Christ is he.”

It is significant that Revelation 2:17 says,
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Concerning this, Jamieson-Fausset-Brown writes, “The same is said of the ‘new name’ of believers. In this, as in all other respects, the disciple is made like his Lord. The Lord’s own ‘new name’ is to be theirs.”

I have discovered as a believer that there are some things no one can know except the believer himself and the Lord. No one can know with certainty whether another soul is saved. That is a secret between the Lord and the individual. None of us fully understands the divine relationship between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. But one thing is certain: those who do not know Christ as Saviour cannot know this relationship at all.

Faith’s Hidden Certainty: The Mystery of Assurance

✨ The Bible reminds us that some things are known only to the believer and the Lord (Revelation 19:12; 2:17). Assurance of salvation is one of those sacred mysteries—deeply personal, unseen by man, but certain in Christ.

👉 Question for you: Do you believe assurance of faith is something that can be fully explained, or is it a mystery known only between you and God? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Revelation 18:6 (KJV) Rules of Engagement

Revelation 18:6 (KJV) Rules of Engagement

Revelation 18:6 (KJV)

Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

Barnes notes on this passage, “It is not said to whom this command is addressed …”

Gill, however, more confidently claims, “This is spoken to the people of God … these are called upon to take vengeance, by way of retaliation, for what she had done to them …”

We know the Bible teaches:

Romans 12:19 (KJV)
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

But the Bible also teaches:

1 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV)
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

The difference is timing, authority, and by whose hand:

The Timing
This is prophetic. The saints shall judge the world. But today, right now, in this present era, we are commanded to patiently “give place unto wrath.”

The Authority
It is God who tells them, “Reward her even as she rewarded you.” We have no authority to act until God grants such authority. A soldier understands this—he operates under rules of engagement and may not use the power he holds until authorized to do so.

By Whose Hand
2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 (KJV)
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Even in this prophetic scene, it is not we who execute judgment—it is God. Just as in combat, soldiers carry out the action while the nation they represent claims the victory, so too God executes vengeance while His people share in the satisfaction of justice.

Rest instead in the Lord.

Rules of Engagement: Babylon’s Fall

Are you searching the Bible for answers about justice, judgment, and God’s timing? 🔎 Revelation 18:6 reminds us that vengeance belongs to the Lord—not us. Right now, believers are called to rest in the Lord and trust His timing.

👉 What do you think? Why do you believe God tells us to “avenge not yourselves” in this age but promises the saints will one day judge the world? Share your thoughts in the comments below—I’d love to hear from you!

Revelation 17:7 (KJV) The World Wonders, But Believers Know

Revelation 17:7 (KJV)
And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

There are in this world things that befuddle, confound, and amaze us with wonderment (I speak of these in the negative sense). The wickedness, the cruelty, the ungodliness is at times astounding. And it appears that those times are increasing at an alarming rate.

Now hear the word of the Lord: “Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery …” We who read, understand, and believe the Word of God need not marvel at these things. We have before us in this Book the answers to these mysteries.

Revelation 17:8 (KJV)
… and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Unbelievers, the lost—those whose only hope is in this life—shall wonder at these things.

  • They wonder in awe at what the world accomplishes.
  • They wonder in worship of the creature rather than the Creator.
  • They wonder why their ideas, which they are so sure are higher than God’s, do not really make their lives better.
  • They wonder and find no lasting answers.

Of course, the passage before us is prophetic. It has to do with those who, having rejected Christ, must endure the Tribulation. That is a future event. God’s Word clearly promises believers in this church age will be delivered from it in the rapture. We always want to remember the primary understanding of the Bible. Nevertheless, all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable.

Read, believe, and obey the Word of God, and you’ll never have to live in shock over the world and its evil.

Marvel Not: The World Wonders, But Believers Know

What about you? Revelation 17:7–8 reminds us that the lost marvel at the world’s power, but believers who trust the Word of God already know the mystery revealed. Evil may confuse, astound, and overwhelm the world, but the child of God has answers in Scripture and hope in Christ.

Revelation 16:17 (KJV) It Is Finished vs. It Is Done

Revelation 16:17 (KJV)

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

The words seem so final, so foreboding.

But they don’t always feel that way.

  • When a project is completed.
  • When a course is accomplished.
  • When a trip has been successful.
  • When a plan comes together.

One of the most satisfying things I’ve ever experienced was as an ironworker, driving past a building in Colorado I helped construct as a young man, pointing it out to my sons, and saying, “I helped do that.”

There was another time when God spoke words much like these: “It is finished.”

The cross of Christ was, from the human standpoint, cruel, unjust, and senseless. But when Jesus pronounced, at the moment of His death, “It is finished,” the most gracious and glorious of events had been accomplished. God Himself had paid the debt of man’s sin!

That’s what makes this passage so tragic. If only they had responded to Jesus’s words, “It is finished,” they would never have had to endure the moment when God says, “It is done.”

Accepting Christ’s finished work at Calvary promises that sin will never have the final say in our eternity.

It Is Finished vs. It Is Done: Choosing Between Grace and Wrath

What about you? Have you trusted in Christ’s finished work on the cross, or are you still waiting for God’s final words, “It is done”? The difference between those two declarations is the difference between eternal life and eternal judgment.

👉 I’d love to hear your thoughts: Which phrase—“It is finished” or “It is done”—speaks most to you, and why?Share your answer in the comments below.

Revelation 16:17 (KJV) It Is Finished vs. It Is Done

Numbers 21:8 (KJV) Look and Live

Numbers 21:8 (KJV)

And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

I’ve been thinking about this serpent the last few days.

  • Moses made it at the command of God.
  • It was God’s design.
  • It fulfilled God’s purpose.

Moses made it in response to the sin of the people.

Their sin had brought consequences. People were dying. Then this amazing miracle! Whosoever looked on this brazen serpent lived. It makes little sense to the logical mind, but obedience to this simple instruction changed their lives.

But we know that later the people wanted to turn it into an idol. A thing given by God, used miraculously of the Lord, was twisted by men to become a curse.

I think people do the same thing today with other things of God. Their sin has corrupted what God gave for good.

The church is one example.

The church is given by command of God. In and of itself, it’s really nothing. There are hundreds of organizations where people gather. But in the Lord’s church, there are answers to our greatest questions, health for our soul, and encouragement for our future. Obedience to the simple instruction of unity in a local church is life-changing. It was given in response to the sin condition. We know that we who are saved still wrestle with sin, and our place in the church offers us strength against that struggle. But many have twisted, perverted, and changed the church into an idol, an error, in many cases even into an evil.

The answer is not to destroy the local church, nor to quit it. The answer is to return to the roots—to why it exists and for Whom it exists.

Look and Live: The Serpent, the Cross, and the Church

⚔️ The fiery serpent lifted in the wilderness was God’s answer for sin’s deadly sting. Those who looked lived. That same truth still points us to Christ and reminds us of the value of His church today.

📖 Too often, what God gives for good is twisted into an idol. The solution isn’t to abandon the Lord’s church—it’s to return to the roots: why it exists and for Whom it exists.

💬 Question for you: Have you ever seen God’s design for the church misused, and how did it impact your walk with Him? Share your thoughts in the comments below—I’d love to hear your perspective.
