John 19:11 (KJV) Power, Control, and Divine Sovereignty

John 19:11 (KJV)

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

The subject of sovereignty, power, and control is a major debate not only in the realm of Christendom but also in the world of secular philosophy.

People argue:

·       Did God harden Pharaoh's heart? Doesn't that make it God's fault, not Pharaoh's?

·       God created Lucifer; didn't He know ahead of time he would fall? Doesn't that mean God created evil?

We want to make our own choices, to be in charge of our lives. Yet, at the same time, some people want to blame God for all the bad things that happen.

Pilate made sure Jesus knew how much power he had. However, I don't think he fully grasped who truly held power because, despite finding no fault in Jesus and offering an alternative in Barabbas,

·       Pilate surrendered his choice to the will of the people.[1]

·       He ignored his wife's advice and yielded to the desires of people he didn't personally care for.

But even the Jews weren't truly making a choice; they were unwittingly part of God's eternal plan.

And Jesus was okay with that. While God's interest in Jesus is on a grander scale than with us, I believe we would be much more content and happier in life if we learned to defer all power back to God: the ruler, circumstances, events in life, both good and bad.

If we allowed that God allows all these for our good,[2] we would find life's waters much easier to navigate. All our spiritual troubles arise when we try to take charge of everything, blame God when we can't, and attempt to control circumstances beyond our grasp.

Power, Control, and Divine Sovereignty: Deflecting Power to God

[1] Who were Jews, not even his favored group.

[2] Romans 8:28 (KJV)

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
