John 18:3 (KJV) The Humble Leader

John 18:3 (KJV)

Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

I'm picturing perhaps the pride in Judas' heart, "having received a band of men and officers." He's the "top dog" right about then. He has information important people wanted, and that made him appear to be important. I've witnessed many times the negative effects of giving the wrong man a position of authority - leadership. The only people truly qualified to lead are those who, through experience, have been humbled. Not like the feigned humility of Saul who became King Saul. He wasn't humble; he was shy, introverted. Shyness very often is a form of conceit and selfishness. It's the person who thinks too lowly of themselves. When placed in positions of leadership, they easily flip to think too highly of themselves.

·       Judas liked money (the Bible says he was a thief - he sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver)

·       Judas liked authority (he had received this band of men)

·       Judas liked to think that he was wise (he didn't expect that Jesus would be condemned)

But afterward, Judas attempted to return the money and reverse the consequences of his choices. When that didn't work, he went out and killed himself. Suicide is also a form of thinking too much of oneself. It certainly isn't thinking of others.

The Bible says of those who are placed in the office of a bishop that they must be,

1 Timothy 3:6 (KJV)

Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

While the office of the bishop is that which we call pastor, the qualification would be a wise one for any station of leadership: spiritual, political, civil, or vocational.

A man who has not been tested and proven humble will certainly turn out to be a wreck in any office of leadership.
