1 Thessalonians 5:4 (KJV) A Day of Reckoning

1 Thessalonians 5:4 (KJV)

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

While Christians and unbelievers might use different terms to describe it, and although we see different outcomes from it, any observant person can recognize that “the times, they are a-changin’.” These are unprecedented days. There have been times in history that were more brutal, I’m sure.

- Attila the Hun

- Genghis Khan

- The Gothic Wars

- The Dark Ages

I can’t imagine anyone who would trade our day for those.

- The Inquisitions

- The reign of Bloody Mary

I’m glad I’m not part of that age.

But beginning in the 1600s, just after the translation of the King James Version of the Bible, a major shift took place—a shift toward a kind of peace that had not been known at any time previously. That peace, along with tolerance of religious freedom, developed and grew, at least in the West, for the better part of 400 years. Sure, there have been notably bad times and some notably evil events during those 400 years, but there was also a prevailing moral character always willing to rise up and squash the evil.

Things seem to be different now. It feels like the prevailing spirit of the age wishes to rise up and squash the moral character that opposes evil.

The burden of this passage is not the “times and seasons” we live in—everyone knows about that. The burden is rather of a day approaching. It’s a day the Christian is warned about and aware of, but that the unbeliever flatly denies. It’s the crux of our message. It’s the purpose of the gospel. It’s the meaning of life.

There is coming a day of reckoning for all things, and it’s not something to be caught in unaware; our text calls it being “overtaken” by it.

It’s a great day for those who are ready. God will wipe away all tears from our eyes. Eternity is God’s goal and ours.

But it will be a day far worse than anything in history for those who are overtaken by it.

Though the unbelieving mock us and evil fights against us, the only intention of the Christian is to shed light into the darkness so that another soul—and then another—can find their way to the safety of salvation in Christ against that day.
