And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.
The Bible is supernatural in character. It reveals information of a supernatural nature, such as the existence, work, and nature of angels, the plan of eternal salvation, and the three Persons of the Godhead. But the Bible is also normal in many ways. It was supernaturally given—God-breathed—but it was penned by men like any of us. It observes the normal things of nature, such as the seasons, the rising and setting of the sun, the boundaries and the tides of the ocean. The Bible takes note of scientific facts, such as the kinds of animals, the water cycle, the spherical shape of the earth, and the innumerability of the stars.
Then the Bible observes things of a practical nature, as we see in this text. The Egyptians, finding they could not drink the river turned to blood, dug next to the river in search of clean water. There is some science involved in that, as well as some practical skills well known among the survivalist community. One of the survival skills for obtaining pure water is to dig a small well near a water source and allow the soil between the water source and the well to filter the water.
The Bible records, for those who will see it, not a meaningless event or the acts of desperate men, but an actual and valuable means of surviving in a harsh environment.
Proverbs 25:2 (KJV)
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
