And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
Though their question was appropriate—after all, Jesus was overturning more than just the moneychangers’ tables—His doctrine, miracles, and followers all testified to His authority. It should have been obvious by what authority He did these things, and if they had truly listened to His messages, they would have already known.
Some people ask questions not because they seek the truth, but because they want to continue an argument. Jesus exposed this motive with His own question in response. The religious leaders refused to answer, fearing the reaction of the people. It is reasonable to assume they intended to use Jesus' answer to stir up opposition against Him.
By refusing to answer them, Jesus provides two key lessons:
A Warning
If we desire the Lord’s guidance in life, we must be honest in our seeking. Too often, we even hide from ourselves the real reasons we seek His help and what we would do with His answer. Reasoning among ourselves is no way to pray. Honesty, humility, openness, and sincerity—these are the keys to answered prayer.
Practical Advice
We are not obligated to answer every challenger’s questions. Engaging in endless debates with those who seek only to argue is both a waste of time and a hindrance to the cause of Christ. While we are commanded to always be ready to give an answer for the hope that is within us,[1] that answer is for those who genuinely seek the same hope.
