Luke 19:9 (KJV) Praying for the Lost

Luke 19:9 (KJV)

And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

The story of Zacchaeus is one of the more well-known Sunday school lessons.

       He was small of stature.

       He was a chief publican.

He wanted to see Jesus, so

       He climbed into a tree.

Publicans were considered crooks by just about everyone. They were appointed by the Romans to collect taxes, and from what I’ve read, their methods were often dishonest, coercive, and corrupt. Zacchaeus was chief among them.

It occurs to me that he was essentially a corrupt government official. His sin—the one they accused him of in this text—was working for the government.

We live in a politically volatile time. Regardless of whether one is liberal or conservative (these days, people exaggerate those to communist or monarchist), we probably all believe there are plenty of sinners in government. Our current president has undertaken to “drain the swamp” by removing as many corrupt government workers as he possibly can.

But then

·    Zacchaeus met Jesus.

·    Zacchaeus was saved.

·    Zacchaeus was included in the family of God.

Even the politicians you dislike the most ought to have the chance to meet Christ personally.

I pray they do.
