Personal Mercy/National Desolation

2 Kings 22:19-20
Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

Though God said that the nation was going to be judged, still Josiah saw mercy from the Lord.

We are living in a time when it might not be possible to turn God's judgment against our nation. Years of godlessness appear to be coming home to roost. Judgment is on the doorstep, yea has already begun. God's people, who have been encouraged to humble themselves and seek God's face and pray have failed to turn the tide of wickedness in our country.

Still, there is no cause of panic among the children of the Lord. AS Josiah received mercy so may each and every one of us. Josiah's repentance toward God was

Genuine
It proved itself from early on as he walked with God even when his father did not.

PersonalJosiah had a personal desire to walk with the Lord and to know Him

BiblicalI do not know how many years the Bible had been hidden out of the sight of Israel. But that Bible was once again discovered in Josiah's day. Josiah had read it. He knew what it said and his concern to do right - though actually beginning from before they had discovered the Bible, was now motivated out of the warnings found within those pages.

God's mercy to Josiah was that he would be "gathered into thy grave in peace." Death is no punishment but is often a sign of God's blessing as He gathers us to Himself.
