He Worketh the Work of the Lord

1 Corinthians 16:10 KJV
Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.

Paul had told them in 1 Cor 4:17 that he had sent Timothy to them, but here Paul makes his coming sound uncertain. Paul had undoubtedly commissioned Timothy to visit a number of churches on this trip and, given the days in which they lived;
The general danger of travel
The risk of falling among thieves and
The danger of capture by those unfriendly toward the faith
Paul's words carried with them a certain degree of question. And why not?
James 4:15 KJV
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
The Christian ought to live in a state of "if." We are servants of the Lord and His will is oftentimes unique for our own. Even the best of men mistake what would be the will of God and even the best of men are hindered from their own plans as was Apostle Paul on more than one occasion.

Paul gives this testimony of Timothy, "he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do."

John Gill says of Timothy
"though he was not in so high an office as the apostle, yet he was
called to the same work of the ministry, was
engaged in the same service of Christ, andwas
zealous in promoting the same common cause, interest, and kingdom of the Redeemer, and
faithfully preached the same Gospel as the apostle did"

Timothy's position was not the same as the Apostles, but work was the same. This is what makes a local church dynamic and effective for the Lord; we can't all have the same position, but if we will do the same work - under the direction first of the Lord and that as following His pastor, we can make a difference in the world for Christ.
