Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
The context implies that there are some who may be saved but who are spiritually asleep. Paul appeals to these, he had led to saving faith and established in a local church, his charge to keep, that they covenant with him not to sleep.
Of course the word is not speaking of taking rest in sleep. He must be speaking of being vigilant and sober minded in their walk with the Lord.
Some who claim salvation have no awareness of the spiritual battle that surrounds them.
• They are swept up with every wind of evil doings
• They are carried away in every tide of worldly affection
• They might be saved, it is sometimes difficult to tell, but they are like driftwood, tossed about in the waves of this sea called life.
It does not have to be! Awake to righteousness and sin not, for some have not the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. We are children of the light and of the day. We can awake.
