2 Corinthians 8:9 KJV
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
In stressing the measures in which the Christian should go in giving Paul reminds us of Christ, who was rich but became poor so we might be rich. The obvious application, as is born out in the following verses, is that this is the example we should follow in our own giving; one who is rich giving our wealth to the point of becoming poor so that another might be made rich.
The Apostle means to employ it as an example and not as a command. We are not commanded to give to the point of poverty. But, given that example, we are urged to give abundantly and beyond what we likely would have given otherwise.
We could never give too much so long as we are giving out of the motivation of the Spirit and for the sake of the Lord.
