2 Corinthians 13:7 KJV
Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that
we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though
we be as reprobates.
The
Apostle appealed to the Corinthians to do no evil. Certainly, it is best when
people don't. But in this passage he qualifies why a person ought to do right
rather than wrong. Doing right is always the right thing. But it is possible to
do right for the wrong reasons.
Some
people do right for the sake of appearances.
- They do the right thing though inwardly
they are thinking the wrong thing
- They do the right thing, but they do it for
praise of men
- They do the right thing but they do it to
manipulate others
Paul said
the right reason to do right is that it is right.
I would
sure prefer that a person does the right thing even if he does it for wrong
reasons. It is never right to do wrong. But better still that we do right
because it is right to do right.
Whenever our girls would leave the house I would tell them to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do.
