Leviticus 6:12-13 KJV
And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in
it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every
morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon
the fat of the peace offerings.
The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar;
it shall never go out.
Gill says that
there were three fires or rather piles of wood around the altar:
- The first was the
large fire used to burn the sacrifices
- The second was a
smaller fire used to maintain the burning incense in the tabernacle
- The third was a small
fire which was lit with fire come down from heave and which was to be
maintained so that it never went out
The symbolism
is at least two fold representing:
First, the
never ending mercy of God
His mercies are
new every morning. It is never consumed. It never ceases.
Second the need
for continually renewed worship of the people of God toward God
We are to be in
a perpetual state of renewal and revival. The fire of our adoration and worship
of the Lord ought never to cease and this is accomplished only through constant
maintenance. No Christian will continue to burn brightly for The Lord without
making the effort to so.
God’s mercy
never ceases but our fervor may die out without constant care.
