Let Us Draw Near

1 Samuel 14:36 KJV
And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

While Saul planned a raid on the Philistines the priest urged they first draw near to God.

I find in this what should ultimately be the duty of every Christian since we are all made priests through Jesus Christ.

The world plans things. They execute with more or less success their
  • plans and
  • programs and
  • strategies
for conquest and spoil.
  • Sometimes they have the good of people in mind
  • Many times their only motive is self-serving
In either case, Christians are best used as salt and light when, while the world makes their plans, we urge them to draw near to God.

The passage has a particular application to the preacher too. If there is anyone whose focus ought to be on calling men to draw near to God it is the preacher. Every Christian has a duty. The pastor has that duty more so, for he has given his life and has been called of God for this very work. Others may get preoccupied and forget. The pastor had better never get so preoccupied.
