Christ in the Flesh

Ephesians 2:11 KJV
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

There is that which is called Gentiles in the flesh and that whose circumcision in the flesh is made by hands. These two have been at odds since the beginning of Jewish history. But both forms of fleshliness (the one an absence of true religion by the will of the flesh, and the other a form of godliness but only in the flesh) are reconciled by the flesh of just One, Jesus Christ.

This is much more than a play on words. The enmity that exists in this world is an enmity in the flesh. It is the sin of man. It is his willful choice to pursue his own righteousness (or to willfully ignore righteousness altogether) that is the source of all enmity-that which exists between men, and that which exists between God and man.

It is precisely Christ's identification with flesh that enables Him to abolish this enmity.
  • He became flesh and dwelt among us
  • He was in all points tempted like as we are yet without sin
  • He fulfilled all the righteousness of the Law in His flesh

And, when He died, He took in His flesh the sin of mankind, thus propitiating the wrath of God and removing the partition between fleshly circumcision and uncircumcision.
