1 Corinthians 14:9 KJV
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue
words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall
speak into the air.
At one time Paul reminded the believers in Corinth that he had not come to them with enticing
words of man's wisdom. He had determined to know nothing among them save Jesus
Christ and Him crucified. Here he takes on a "follow up" subject,
urging them to imitate his example and, rather than to try to impress people
with their ability to speak an unknown tongue, to speak simple words, easy to
understand.
There is a type of
Christianity that attempts to recreate the excitement and air of speaking ecstatic
and unlearned languages. Usually they define it as an angelic language and by
doing so they can form any indistinguishable sound they please and call it the
language of the angels. Who is to know the difference since none of us are
angels? But the bulk of Christendom has moved passed that understanding, as
Paul taught, that these tongue have ceased. However there is still a practical
lesson for us to so speak about our faith that we are easily understood.
There is no good
purpose served in trying to impress people with our command of language. Our
purpose is not to increase the vocabulary of those we address in church. We
have not been charged by God to use the house of the Lord as a school house or
even an institution of higher learning. Our objective, our Goal and our duty is
to pass our faith to another. That may not be done with ecstatic languages they
cannot comprehend or high brow speeches they do not understand.
Keep your words
about Christ simple, plain and easy to be understood.
