Ezekiel 18:29
Yet
saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel,
are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
I am reminded of Matthew
20:1-14 when Jesus gives a parable about a man who is generous enough to give
those who only worked an hour the same wages as those who had worked all day at
an agreed upon wage. The man was honest with those who worked all day and
extremely gracious to those who had worked just an hour. Yet those who had
worked all day thought they had been treated unfairly.
Jesus used the parable to teach
concerning this age of grace. The Jews have been the apple of God's eye for
thousands of years.
· He performed
amazing miracles for their people
· He promised
them they would be a blessing to all nations
· He gave to
them the Word of God and
· He brought
the Saviour to the World through them
Yet in the end, God's grace
extended not only to the Jews but to the Gentiles as well.
And the Jews have been
incredulous ever since.
· How could
God love the Gentiles?
· How could
they possibly be included into the grace of God?
· How could
His Saviour possibly reach out to them as well as the Jews?
Just as the servants who had
born the heat of the day murmured that they should have received better wages,
so the Jews of Ezekiel's account accused God of being unequal. God's Word here
claims that it is not the one who lives righteously all his life but turns to
sin toward the end is saved, but the one who ends his life in repentance,
though he may have lived years in sin.
Here is a New Testament truth
that is despised and rejected among many; that regardless of what your past has
held, if you will come to Jesus Christ He will forgive your sins and save you.
It might be late in your life. You may feel like you are the least deserving of
His grace. You could have years of rebellion under your belt, but if you will
come to Christ in repentance and ask for His salvation it is yours as much as
the one who is saved as a child.
