Psalms 103:2 (KJV) Don’t Forget the Good

Psalms 103:2 (KJV)
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
It is, I think, an observable truth that we tend to forget good things.
  • Bad things
  • Negative things
  • Painful things
demand that we not forget them.
Those things considered newsworthy are almost always badThe news programs generally attempt to provide something of a positive nature but those things are awkwardly interjected and not what sells their work.
Entertainment is more likely to get our attention if it has some action, usually violent, in it.Sappy stuff just won’t keep us long.
Just  so, the few negative things of life hold on in our heads much longer than the many positive things.
God does good things for every human every day all day.
  • We have air to breath
  • We have others who love us
  • We have a heart that beats
Besides these we have the benefits David rehearses in the Psalm:
  • Iniquities forgiven
  • Diseases healed
  • Life redeemed
  • Lovingkindness and mercy
  • Wants satisfied
  • Judgment executed
It is easy to forget, for instance, how many times we have recovered from an illness when we find ourselves bedridden.
The lesson of the passage is to simply remind ourselves not to forget these benefits. It must be a daily discipline, and more important on those difficult days, to forget not His benefits.
“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed. When you are discouraged thinking all is lost. Count your many blessings, name them one by one. And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”[1]
