1 Samuel 8:5-7 (KJV)
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Is this not a fascinating passage? When the people complained about Samuel’s ungodly sons and demanded a king instead of a prophet to replace Samuel, God never once mentioned Samuel’s sons. He immediately went to the heart of the people who rejected God’s plan.

It is not that the ungodliness of his boys was all right in the sight of God. We know it was not. But we also know God is perfectly capable of dealing with them. He did so in the case of Eli’s sons. More at issue is the rejection of the people against God’s pattern of authority.

We live in a day when many reject true Christianity and local church assemblies. They cite the corruption in all that they know as Christianity as justification for rejecting the church. I understand. Most of Christendom is Christ-less. But God has already planned His judgment of that. More serious is the rejection of the church Jesus loves and the organization and structure He places in it.

God will allow people to reject His church and create their own kind of religion. But they will pay a heavy price for it.
