Proverbs 8:35-36 (KJV)
For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

There is this duel effect that is found so often in the Christian Faith:

• Its heavenly effect
• Its earthly effect 

Very often people get the two out of sorts. We either become so fed up with the earthly that we retreat into our own little monasteries, or else we become so focused on the earth that we forget all about eternity.

I notice this duel effect in the passage before us.

Concerning wisdom God said that if we find it we obtain favor with the Lord.
Finding wisdom is more about pleasing God than benefiting ourselves. Yes, there are benefits. Life and favor are benefits. But more importantly is that God is pleased. The reason to grow as a Christian is to glorify God. It is not about what we get as it is about making the Lord manifest.

On the other hand, to turn from wisdom is to wrong our own soul.
We do not hurt God or the cause of Christ when we reject the lessons of God’s Word. We do, however damage self.
