Isaiah 64:1-3 (KJV)
Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
The burden of the preacher expressed in this prayer tells me that God didn’t “rend the heavens” very often. Sounds like he would have loved to have God do it right then.
We know that it didn’t exactly happen. There were some periods of national revival after this, but Isaiah has to have been looking into the prophecies God gave him for Judah’s future and knew, unless the heavens were rent, they would be taken captives into Babylon.
Isaiah admitted that his desire was something he could not imagine, something he could not express with detail. He knew God had done unbelievable things for His people in the past and only knew they needed God to do the same once again.
I believe in specific praying. I agree that we need to:
- Seek the Lord
- Determine His will and
- Pray specifically for that
But in those matters that matter most we would be best to leave the details in the hands of God. He knows what we need more than we ever can.
